Commander Neil Sexton, from Indianapolis, Indiana, received his bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy in Oceanography in 1995.
Upon commissioning, he reported aboard USS TICONDEROGA (CG 47) homeported in Pascagoula, Mississippi and served as Electrical Officer, Auxiliaries Officer, and Main Propulsion Assistant. He also qualified as Surface Warfare Officer and Engineering Officer of the Watch during this tour. His next sea tour was as Assistant Operations Officer for AMPHIBIOUS SQUADRON ELEVEN embarked in USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA 3) in Sasebo, Japan. During this tour, Commander Sexton was assigned as planning officer for the joint United States and Republic of Korea Naval Forces exercise FOAL EAGLE, the largest exercise in the Pacific.
Commander Sexton completed his graduate studies in Monterey, CA at the Naval Post Graduate School earning a Masters of Science degree in Applied Physics in 2001. It was during this tour that he became an Engineering Duty Officer. Following graduate studies he attended the Navy’s Diving and Salvage Training Center where he qualified as Basic Dive Officer.
His first maintenance tour was aboard Ship Repair Facility, Yokosuka, Japan from 2002 through 2005. He served as Ship Superintendent for several surface ship yard periods, Dive Officer, Docking Officer and Type Desk Officer. During this tour he qualified as an Engineering Duty Officer. In summer of 2005 he reported aboard as Course Director at the Engineering Duty Officer School in Port Hueneme, CA. His next maintenance tour was at Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center detachment Bahrain as Assistant Officer in Charge and CTF-53 Diving and Salvage Officer for FIFTH FLEET.
Commander Sexton reported aboard Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 2008 assigned as Deputy Project Superintendent for the USS BOISE and USS NEWPORT NEWS availabilities. He completed his shipyard tour as the assistant Business and Strategic Planning Officer in December 2010.
Commander Sexton's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three Awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
