Captain Alejo enlisted into the Navy on 15 November 1976 in Subic Bay, Naval Station, Philippines. He attended Boot Camp in San Diego California followed by Seamanship Refresher Training.

His first assignment was aboard USS SPARTANBURG COUNTY (LST 1192) as a Fireman assigned to Electrical Division from 1977-79. From there he attended Electricians’ Mate “A” School in Great Lakes, IL then transferred to USS DETROIT (AOE 4) as Electrical Division Leading Petty Officer and was deployed to the Mediterranean during the 1981 Libyan crisis.

From 1982 to 1985, he was assigned to Ship’s Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA), Submarine Base, Pearl Harbor, HI.

In November 1985, he reported aboard USS REID (FFG 30) as Electrical Division Leading Chief Petty Officer. While on USS REID (FFG 30) he qualified as Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) and was Repair 5 Locker Leader as part of Rescue and Assistance Team that was sent onboard USS STARK (FFG 31) during Persian Gulf deployment in MARCH 1987. In June 1988, he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer and received a commission as an Ensign via the Limited Duty Officer program on 01 November 1988.

Upon receiving his commission, his first tour as an officer was aboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) where he served as Electrical Officer. From there he transferred to USS FORD (FFG 54), where he served as Auxiliaries Officer.

Captain Alejo’s next tour was at Afloat Training Group, Pacific as Engineering Gas Turbine Team Leader. Upon departing ATGPAC in December 1996, he reported aboard USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) where he served as Maintenance Officer until ship’s decommissioning in October 1998.

In November 1998 he reported to COMDESRON 15 as the Command’s Readiness Officer and Detachment Officer In Charge (OIC) until November 2000. His next assignment was aboard USS BOXER (LHD 4) as Chief Engineer. In 2002 he was assigned to COMNAVSURFPAC Staff for one year then served with Expeditionary Strike Group THREE as Material Officer onboard USS PELELIU (LHA 5) and USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA 3).

Captain Alejo was aboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) based in Mayport, FL where he served as the last Chief Engineer of one of the Navy’s last two conventionally powered aircraft carriers from December 2005 until ship’s decommissioning in August 2007. For his follow-on tour, Captain Alejo was the Commanding Officer, Regional Support Organization, PACIFIC NORTH WEST, from December 2007 to September 2009.

Most recently, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff Officer for Readiness, Maintenance and Training onboard Expeditionary Strike Group, SEVEN homeported in Sasebo, Japan, from October 2009 to November 2011.

His personal decorations include Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and numerous additional unit and campaign medals. He was the recipient of Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces Leadership Award in 2006.
